It's the new web comic about promoting the metric system in America. "You can't promote the metric system in America! They tried it before, and it didn't work." Whatever! But I feel the need to do a metric promo comic because it's an uncommon deal, and therefore contributes to what I believe is true creativity. I have to do my own thing, you know.

Hi All -

I am trying to redo my website so that it's easier to read. Do any of you know of any kind of web add-on where you can add numerous "photo galleries" to your own site, using your own layout?

Most of the ones I have seen out there make you go to THEIR site, use THEIR layouts.

Any help would be appreciated and you will be rewarded with a virtual donut.

Hi everyone - I was wondering if you've all heard of WOWIO.com. It's a site that has all kinds of ebooks that you can download for free. They've even got hundreds of independent comics, even from some famous names like Clive Barker, Dwight MacPherson, Arcana Studio, Avatar Press, and more!

We (Alterna Comics) signed up for it about two weeks ago and we've already had almost 1,000 downloads! It's a great place to read some great material and it's starting to become a premier virtual library! It's free to sign up and takes about 5 minutes so if you're interested, please join!

It seems like the busniess comic is now on hold. I think it's because of a family emergency. Nevertheless, the good news persists in that I've been hired to do yet another web comic, and I've already been paid for it. I believe it's called "Paper People", and I'm illustrating the strips as we speak. The payment I reveived was for sample art related to the strip. And as things stand now, I'm likely to keep this new web comic gig for a while. Or at least that's one possiblity.

It looks like I might be getting two new web comics gigs soon. One of these gigs involves doing a Dilbert-like busniess comic. Unfortunately, I'm at kind of a block as to how to get this comic done. Have any suggestions for episodes and such for this comic? I could really use some ideas soon. If not, I'll figure it out for myself. It could work that way, but not as soon as I'd like.

Cartoonist glut?

I think there's a cartoonist glut. Of course that's an opinion, so I don't exactly have proof. But my experience (and the experences of others) seems to indicate that there is a glut of cartoonists. Consider the cartoon syndication example. As I understand it, cartoon syndicates only select two or three new comics a year. And they usually choose those few comics out of thousands of submissions. Thus only a tiny percentage of cartoonists will get syndicated while the vast majority will never get syndicated. You'd have much better chances winning the lotto.

I've concluded that the best way to mitigate the cartoonist glut is through the Internet. Unike a newspaper which only has room for 20 or 30 comics, the Internet has room for millions of comics. There are billions of web sites after all. But it's not quite as easy as that since you have to go through the difficulty of finding the web site or web sites that will publish your comic. Even so, you have a better chance of getting a comic published on the Internet than you have of winning the lotto. And you have a far, far, far, far better chance of getting a comic published on the Internet than you have of or getting your comic syndicated.

Just a little perspective help... That's all I need...

Okay, so I'm trying to sort out a shot for a panel. It's one of those standard guy standing on the roof of a building, looking down over the city, shots. The thing is, I can't seem to get the perspective to work out. I've tried 1 point, 2 point, and thought about 3 point, but could really visualize it. So I kind of cheated, and put it together in small form (about the size of a 3x5 card) here:

Anybody have suggestions on how to plan this thing? It's so standard, and yet it's making me crazy...

I'm of the mind that it makes no sense to have the ability to communicate and NOT have an audience for that communication. Therefore, I feel the need to ask those who are more persuasive than I am (and that's the vast majority of people) to persuade people to buy my comics and such. Just wanted to bring that up.

Does anyone know where I can find a large amount of glossy paper size 8" x 11" or larger that's low-cost or no-cost? I'm very busy with a lot of cartoon projects these days, and I believe using glossy paper could speed up the process.

I just uploaded more Whiners pages.
http://www.comicspace.com/timelike01/comics.php?action=gallery&comic_id=7333
For those who don't know (and that's most of you), Whiners is a web comic miniseries I creatred that deals with a small group of whiny cats and their human friend as they travel to other universes in search of a world where cat persecution doesn't exist. After all, cat persecution is one of the most prominent and obscene cliches in history. Whiners represents a more creative view of the cat bashing cliche in that it regards that mess as the mess that it is. Very rare in today's modern dystopia.

Most major comics publishers are (too) conservative

I am SPECULATING HERE, so please don't accuse me of making accusations. But I believe one reason why it's so hard for me to get my comics published by a major publisher is because most mainsteam comics publishers are (too) conservative. Meaning that they tend to believe that doing things the convential way is the most likely way for them to maintain their success. Perhaps they believe that since being conventional has benefited them for so long, they figure that publishing new-fangled toons with way-out concepts would pose a danger to their success. Risk aversion is another way to put it. "But, Yul, why don't you just do cartoons the way the bigshots want them to be one?" Well one reason I don't is because even that is no guarantee of success. I could literally rip off a successful comic and have it rejected on those grounds. So creating a comic that is 100 percent what the publisher wants is highly, highly difficult.

Give the public what they want -- NOT!

I've been told my numerous people that the only way I'll be able to successfully sell my comics is if I give the comic-reading public what they want. because apparently the way I do comics is not what the public wants. In other words, my comics present unpopular imagery as well as unpopular ideas. Now I fully understand the reasoning behind that. But I still reject the "normal" way of doing comics because (1) I live in a free country where freedom of expression exists and (2) I live in a world where the human population is over 6 billion.

It may be true that I wont make money doing comics the way I want. But it is also true that I have a consitutional right to produce comics the way I want. That also means I have the right to produce comics that are unpopular and unprofitable. As for the population of 6 billion issue, there is a lot of diversity amongst such a vast and inconcievably high population. Therefore, people who have the mentality to appreciate my comics are very likely to exist. The only problem here is the extreme difficulty in finding such people. Other than that, I should -- in theory -- be ale to do comics the way I want and find a small yet substantial number of people who can appreciate them.

Of course there's a good chance that many of you will disagree with my position here. Whatever. But in any event, I still believe that I should do comics my way whether they meet the public's approval or not. Life is already boring enough as it is.

One reason why I don't go to comic conventions to promote my comics is because I'm lousy at it. That is, I'm no good at getting people to buy my comics. As such, you have to remember that not everybody is good at everything. In my case, I'm not good at promoting my comics. Just wanted to bring that up.

You know, I learned something today. I learned that Detroit is a HORRIBLE place for creative people to live. And I learned that by going to Craig's List. In the Detroit section of the list, I noticed that there are extremely few freelance art jobs in Detroit. But when I went to the New York, Chicago and Los Angeles sections, I noticed those cities have freelance art jobs by the megaton. Therefore if I want to improve my chances of succeeding at art, I need to get my black ass out of Detroit. It's like living amongst the Borg Collective here anyway.

Faraign Saige - needed a decent "Opener" for Episode 01.

Spent at least a month and 1/2 - writing new material in text / sketchwork

*** There will be days I'd write about 8 to 10 pages, upload them as .html and .rtf files on a YahooGroup site - and would spend the following couple of days, regretting why I put certain things in the story.

*** My priorities with trying to copy or imitate Marvel / Japanpop style gave way to wanting to use some alternative mediums such as Watercolors and Airbrushing, and the use of Vincent Van Gogh's style of the use of paint to break out of everybody's impression of how a graphic novel should look like.

What I couldn't seem to find is a good plot.

Where does Eugene Peiste, The Calligrapher starts telling his story ?!?
--- I've reached the point that the Cathloc Community would be rather upset with how the script is going. When the story evolves with some Adventurers who expand their search to find a cult that has stolen the cure for the plauge ... (( Borrowed from the RPG's Neverwinter Nights - and the use of Charwood / Port Llast Townships to set the scene of a Tavern / Farmhouse )).

The Villian turns out to be Eugene Peiste's "Pious Father" who dabbles with something and has become a controlling, greedy, person who fights his failing body in the declining years and gets turned into a healthy person whose personality and appearance gets grotesque over time... which might go past Episode 01.

More sub-stories are happening behind the scenes - Such as a Scout Ranger's need to get new information about finding where to get the cure for the Plauge. The third one being the strange beasties... at least one Monster trying to enter the Tavern full of people.

Will update this post - when new artwork and info comes out in the future.

You guys might want to check out the comic I am working on....

http://groups.msn.com/ZedsComics/shoebox.msnw?Page=1

It's a comic book about the time that I worked at the Anarchist Bookstore in Kensignton Market in downtown Toronto. In the summer of 2005, a group of 'Street Kids' (punkers in their 20's) moved into the backyard and announced that they were taking it over by force. They argued that they were turning the backyard into a 'squat', and that we couldn't call the Police because the Police wouldn't help us. Then, these 'squatters' promptly invited all the local drug dealers to start plying their trade in the 'safety' of the backyard. This would be a good location, since it was so close to the 'Hot Box' marijuana cafe down the block. It is legal to smoke marijuana in Canada, but not to buy or sell it.
The rumours through the grapevine said that one or more of the 'squatters' in the back were agent provocteurs, hired by the Police to attract all of the local drug dealers into one enclosed area to make a massive bust, then frame the Anarchist bookstore as a 'front' for this activity. This way, the Police could kill two birds with one stone.
We ended up asking them all to leave, but this is a story about what could have happened.

Hello People,
I find myself in the same boat as Master Atticus... I've been scripting with Final Draft's general screenplay format but finding an effective Comic Script Template for the program has become a personal obsession. Checked Diggle's website and the promised template is nowhere to be found... Downloaded big Anthony's Template and its giving me fits... Turn me on to a viable download and I'll be your best friend. Thanks.

Certain people like to tell me that it's impossible for me to have total creative freedom and make profit at the same time. Well, certain recent events have convinced me that they are wrong (or at least mostly inaccurate). I just slapped together a web comic that will provide me with a much bigger audience than ever, and potentially lead me to profitable cartooning ventures. Here's the web comic in question:
http://www.nailbytes1.com/rw02010.htm

I also can't help but to ask why are there so many creative people who oppose creativity? But since that question is off topic here, so I won't go into it any further. But I will say that at least my population of 6 billion theory is accurate. (And please don't give me that "There are billions of people in poverty and the last thing on their minds is looking at web comics. Plus, most of the world's population doesn't have Internet access." stuff. I've known that for years, and I probably knew it before you did!)

Anyway, doing web comics for popular web sites kicks ass!

New artist's strip idea

Hi I'm a college student my name is Tony. I've begun a strip thats based on dysfunction horror insanity and overall weirdness. My strip is called Arsonick. It's about me and my multiple personality who comes out when I'm mad (Arsonick) he then goes ranting and raving and possibly killing people in the process. Also are the adventures of Stan a Drug addicted college drop out who had the devil living in his computer now the devil is stuck living with him for all eternity and stan has to make the best of his life while trying to figure out the madness of the paranormal, the hardships of being in withdrawl and the fact noone will date him. The third character is Lobotoboy named Glen he was an insane baby who escaped from the insane baby hospital lucky they were going to turn him into a ribwich, him and stan descover each other over the internet while glen is being shuffled from fosterhome to home because he kills the parents. They forrm a bond and start to question what is actually going on in their world. The drawings have a mixture of a southparky jhonen vasquez dirgy feel just imagine crappy artwork that makes you want to puke and dialoge thats equally as disgusting. I have a whole issue almost illustrated already all done in my lovely fine tip sharpies. So if anyone is willing to help me torture the world with more filth and disintegration of morals. Please reply.

For COmic Book hopefuls

The following is something I've been asked a few times. I wanted to share this with anyone who is interested but also, feel free to ammend things that you think are needed. This isnt me being an ego maniac and telling people the ONLY way comics should be drawn. Not at all. This is for those folks who desire to learn how to draw comics but dont have the means to go to school, etc. A springboard if you will.

-For those seeking guidance in the drawing and illustration and creation of comic books but can't afford a full time school. A few simple suggestions that don't require tons of money but DOES require a lot of time.

1) DRAW DAILY. Scribble, sketch, doodle; just draw. Do it for ten minutes a day. AT LEAST. Make time for this. Let it grow into more. Comic book artists draw one to two pages a day. A DAY. They have deadlines of a month for (typically) 22 pages. Sometimes the deadlines are longer due to the needs of the inkers, colorists and letterers and editors who have to clean up your mistakes...BUT NOT ALWAYS!!! If a deadline is missed you dont get a poor grade or a slap on the wrist; you eventually get NO MORE WORK.

2) DRAW FROM LIFE. Whenever you can. Sign up for a life drawing course. Most cities have a once a week life drawing class that will cost you no more than 5 bucks for 3 hours of figure drawing. If you can take a community college course with an instructor; DO IT. It's so invaluable. It'll teach you WORLDS. If you can't take a course, drag your ass outside, sit on a bench with your sketch book, pencils and will-to-do and draw people passing by. Don't stress on the details. Get the action down first. Draw the details later.

3) CHECK OUT: "HOW TO DRAW COMICS THE MARVEL WAY". This is a great book that I highly recommend. It'll get your creative juices flowing. It has great art by master artist John Buscema who makes drawing comics look easy. The bastard!!! It has everything you need to know to jump into the field of comics; action poses, drawing real people, acting, perspective, backgrounds, panel layouts, and the tools every comic artist needs to draw a comic page. If you can't find it at Borders or your local bookstore, try the library. Make copies of it there. Take the copies home. Pin 'em to your wall and sleep with 'em under your pillow. ABSORB, ABSORB, ABSORB!!!

Also, if you can get your hands on some copies of Mike Manleys; "DRAW" magazine, you'll be a VERY happy camper. Industry greats litter the pages with knowledge of the field about how they do it and sometimes, how you can do it too. DC comics has put out a number of great books that tackle writing comics, drawing comics, inking comics and coloring and lettering comics. They run about 20 bucks each. Great reads all of them.

4) STUDY THE MASTERS. look at Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Gil Kane and many other great comic artists to see how they set up a shot. Break a comic page down to it's bare essentials. Take page 5 of your favorite comic and write out what happens in each panel. The action, the setting, the characters and what they are saying and HOW they are saying it. Think of comics as acting. Players on a 2-dimensional stage that YOU control. Take that written piece of paper, put the comic AWAY, and draw the page from what you have written (Reference the characters costumes if you need to but do it by looking at a different page they are on. Not the one you just wrote about-this is to excercise YOUR imagination. NOT to COPY what the other guy did). What shot would work best? What would move the story along? What is the best possible way for me to illustrate all this information to the reader in a clear and quick way? Ask yourself these questions while you are drawing. Give yourself a deadline while you are drawing the page also. Be reasonable. Give yourself a full day. You're doing this cuz it's fun, remember? But keep in mind that if you want to draw comics for a living, you're going to have to draw the comic within a given deadline. If you can't work within the deadline, your career is going to be very short indeed. Some artists also ink that same pencilled page in the same day. Think you're up to it? Go for it. Have fun!

FINALLY:
These are some thoughts from one of my teachers at the Joe Kubert School of Illustration and Design that have proven most useful to me.

"Making art is a life. It's NOT a job.""Make Art. Not just pictures.""Think about images and the making of Art all the time."

"DON'T follow a strict formula. Remain open to chance happenings that work. Trust your instincts and abilities but don't let that be an excuse for lousy Art."-(see; "Make Art, not just pictures.")

"Hammer on it but think about what you are doing. Aimless hammering is fruitless. It's your brain more than your hands that do it."

Just saw this one

I liked Batman Animated. One of my associates was the top animator under Bruce Timm and the biggest credit next to him on Mask of the Phantasm.
I just saw one I never had seen this weekend, and loved it.
It's hard not to like Poison Ivy in light of worse things in the world:

Originally aired: Monday May 2, 1994 on FOX

Writer: Paul Dini
Director: Boyd Kirkland
Show Stars: Richard Moll (Harvey Dent), Lloyd Bochner (Mayor Hamilton Hill), Edward Asner ((voice) Roland Daggett), Loren Lester (Dick Grayson / Robin), Bob Hastings (Commissioner Jim Gordon), Efrem Zimbalist Jr. (Alfred Pennyworth), Kevin Conroy (Bruce Wayne / Batman)
All Guest Stars: Robert Costanzo (Detective Harvey Bullock), Diane Pershing (Poison Ivy) , Peter Strauss (Dr. Steven Carlyle), Christopher Pickering (Kelly Carlyle), Paul Makauchi (Doctor), Megan Mullally (Cindy), Scott McAfee (Chris Carlyle), Jim Cummings (Saunders)
Production Code: 570

Poison Ivy appears to have gone straight and become suburban homemaker, nevertheless Batman suspects her of a series of plant based crimes in Gotham City.

Episode Notes
In Poison Ivy's photo album there is a picture of Harvey Dent when he approved the construction of Arkham Asylum leading to the eradication of a flower species, which made Poison Ivy try to kill him. You can see also a photo of that flower (these events took place in "Pretty Poison"). There is also a photo of Ivy and Harley from the episode "Harley and Ivy" where they became friends.

Episode Quotes
Poison Ivy: I meant it when I said I wanted a family that loves me... I just wanted it on my terms.
Robin: Lady... you're nuts.
Poison Ivy: Well that's your opinion - probably the last one you'll ever have too.

Stamp price hike

One of the most substantial problems that zine publishers face every so often is the ever-increasing price of postage. Come January, a first class stamp will cost 39 cents. Of course the Post Office finds that sort of increase unavoidable. I find it to be inconvenient (again). Therefore, the question at hand is what to do about it? I think the answer to that question is to do more zine work on the Internet and less zine work in print and through the snail mail. I mean, the Post Office isn't going to lower the price of stamps just because I don't like it. And with many Internet services being free, then I feel compelled to go where the free stuff is. Since that's the case, I plan to find a way to make money off of web comics. Can anybody help me there?

Anyway, the ever increasing price of stamps may eventually end zinedom altogether, or force zinesters to use the Internet more. Or at least that's two possibilities.

SNAP! kicked ass!

SNAP! kicked ass! It was the best comic convention I ever did. I made over $35 selling my comics -- an unprecedented success! Also, the con further proved my "Population of 6 Billion" theory. That is, since there's apopulation of 6 billion, there exists a small yet substantial number of people who have the mentality to appreciate my comics! Moreover, the secret to my success at SNAP! doesn't really seem that secret. SNAP! had a focus on small press comics. While the comic cons I previously attended -- which were mostly unsuccessful for me -- had a focus on mainstream comics.

Yup! That's what I'm talkin' about! If you want to sell small press comics at a comic convention, then you need to go to a convention whose focus is on small press comics. Again I say, SNAP! kicked ass, and there's still a population of 6 billion!

Hi all -

I have my strip online now: www.paperdollie.com. There are still a few missing links, etc. But it's getting there. It's not high art and it's very sick humor. Hope you like it.

Custom comic service is still available

I'm still here, and I still have an active custom comic book service for those interested. The basic details behind my service are that virtually any theme is acceptable and the minimum cost per page is $10. I'd rather not go into further details on the guidelines for my custom comic service because, by definition, each custom comic is unique to each customer. Therefore, the further details will have to be worked out after you've decided to apply for my service. Doesn't that sound like it could work?

I guess you could call it my personal mission to assist everyone with talent and a drive to get seen out there, and to get their works noticed. I know, I know, I'm a nutball, but that's fine---so long as some of you make it, like I'm making it. I'm nothing special guys, but there are doors out there that can open to you if you look in the right place.

So, I would like to share a post, from my website with you, that just may be a door of opportunity for anyone in the right category, and with a set of 'gonads' (sorry ladies---but that includes you too!) to go after it.

Here's the post:

"Great thread!

I am not a comic book artist and outside of "girly" comics as a kid I never read comics or had any interest until I discovered Jaime's WANTED: HERO series. He opened my eyes to the possibilities of comics. Now I am on a new mission. (So blame it on him LOL)

My passion and work is with mental health professionals. In a nutshell, I think they are terrible at communicating their knowledge and services to health seekers. For crying out loud, most of them don’t even have a website or blog! Then they package their knowledge in a 300-page book filled with psychobabble that no one is going to read.

One of my many soapboxes is that the 30 and under clients, who will soon be the majority of their market, communicates in ways that most 40-65 year old therapists do not understand. Mainly, the Internet, websites, multimedia, IM, comics, graphic novels and online games. So we have a situation where most therapists cannot make a living and most health seekers cannot find the
help they need.

Jaime inspired me to think about the possibility of bridging this gap through online comics. I spent many hours exploring the digital comic sites. Frankly, I was very disappointed in most of what I saw. IMO, the world does not need another 100 comics about the daily life and angst of 20 something college students, copies of Manga and Anime comics, or more super-heroes. I looked at over 1,000 comics to find a few that I thought were ABOUT something for [Comics From The Heart www.psychjourney.com/comicsf...eart.htm on Psychjourney.

I believe there is a huge market for therapists who want to reach a new audience, get new clients and make passive income through online comics and graphic novels. I currently have in the planning an online graphic novel on sexuality issues and another on overcoming male sexual & physcal abuse as a child. I am concentrating on male issues on the first two comics since I believe that men are the biggest consumer of comics and that in the therapy field men’s issues have been overlooked.

I am looking for comic artists who are interested in discussing a collaboration to partner with me and a liscenced mental health professional to create comics or graphic novels about dealing with mental disorders, and other psychological issues. The comics will be sold online and include product placement for books and other services.

Contact me at deborah@psychjourney.com

Best,

Does anybody know where and how I can find an agent? I mean, it makes no sense for me to split up time between being creative and doing publicity. Besides, I'm LOUSY at publicity.

Mostly a glorified slide show, but it's brought me a HUGE amount of traffic...and I made it at home on my own. In fact--it's still out there, being sent between people and bringing me traffic.

I have installed a new section of my comic book website, which I am trying to do on a regular basis, to promote more interest in the comic. I used a piece of software that allows for an online encyclopedia, which I turned into a 'Journal' kept by one of the main characters.

I will put new entries in on a regular basis, which will keep it growing---but I wanted to get your feedback and possible ideas for this feature. Take a look at it, read some entries, and let me know if it's interesting to you. Does it make you want to read the comic book? Does it make you curious at all? If you HAVE read the comic already (which many of you have), do you like this new feature?

Let me know.
